Tonight, the first supermoon of the new year will light up the night sky, appearing larger and more luminous than a typical full moon. Astronomical enthusiasts across Pakistan are expected to witness the spectacle as the moon rises.
According to the Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), the supermoon will begin appearing in Pakistan at 5:51 PM. Experts say the moon will appear approximately 6 to 7 percent larger than usual due to its closer proximity to Earth.
Traditionally, this supermoon is referred to as the “Wolf Moon.” Astronomers note that the most striking views will be observed during moonrise, in the early hours of the night, offering a spectacular celestial display.
This supermoon also marks the final event in the supermoon series that began in October 2025, closing the cycle with a visually stunning performance.
Scientists explain that a supermoon occurs when the moon reaches its perigee, the point in its orbit where it is closest to Earth. This closer distance makes the moon appear not only larger but also significantly brighter in the night sky, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring effect for observers on the ground.
Stargazers and astronomy enthusiasts are encouraged to watch the event, as clear skies will offer the best viewing opportunity. Photographers are also likely to capture impressive images, with the enlarged moon rising over landscapes, cityscapes, and natural scenery, making it a memorable celestial sight.
The New Year’s first supermoon promises to be a spectacular astronomical event, combining scientific intrigue with visual beauty, as the Wolf Moon dominates the night sky tonight.
