MUMBAI: Bollywood actor Aamir Khan has spoken publicly about his third marriage after facing criticism and reported death threats from Hindu extremist figures over his personal life.
According to Indian media reports, Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane described Aamir Khan as a “brand ambassador of love jihad” in reference to his marriages. The term “love jihad” is a politically charged and disputed expression used by some groups in India to allege that Muslim men marry non-Muslim women as part of a conversion conspiracy, an allegation that has not been established as a general fact.
The reports further state that Hindu religious leader Jagadguru Paramhans Acharya publicly supported Rane’s remarks and allegedly announced a reward of ₹50 million (5 crore rupees) for anyone who killed the actor, while also reportedly offering to cover the killer’s legal expenses. These reported statements have drawn widespread attention and concern.
Speaking in a recent interview, Aamir Khan clarified that his third wife, Gauri Spratt, is a Christian, not Hindu, as had been claimed by some critics.
The actor also said that neither of his previous wives had converted to Islam after marriage.
“My first wife, Reena, and my second wife, Kiran, did not change their religion after marriage. Gauri has not done so either because we had civil marriages,” Aamir Khan said.
He added that his family has always embraced religious diversity.
“Our family believes in living together with people of all faiths. Both of my sisters are married to Hindu men, my cousin Mansoor married a Christian woman, and my daughter is married to a Hindu man,” he said.
Aamir Khan was married to Reena Dutta in 1986, and the couple divorced in 2002. He later married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005, and they announced their separation in 2021.
According to the reports, the actor has now entered into his third marriage with Gauri Spratt.
The reported death threats against Aamir Khan have not been addressed in detail by law enforcement authorities at the time of reporting.
