SUKKUR (Reporter): The drainage situation in Mirani Mohalla, located near the Exhibition Ground in Old Sukkur’s UC-6, Jiye Shah Town, has deteriorated severely as the electricity supply to the area’s drainage pumping stations has reportedly remained disconnected for the past three months.

Due to the power outage, the motors at the pumping stations have remained non-operational, severely disrupting the drainage system. As a result, sewage water has entered homes, streets and roads, causing serious hardship for local residents.

Residents of Mirani Mohalla staged a protest against the Municipal Corporation administration and raised strong slogans against the authorities. Niek Muhammad Mirani, Noor Muhammad Mirani, Ghulam Fareed Mirani, Bilal Chachar and other residents participated in the protest.

The protesters alleged that the drainage pumping station in Mirani Mohalla had become dysfunctional due to the alleged negligence of the Municipal Corporation. They said electricity to the pumping station motors had been disconnected for the past three months, leaving the entire area submerged in sewage.

Residents said the accumulation of wastewater in homes, streets and roads had severely disrupted their daily lives. They claimed that despite repeatedly lodging complaints with the relevant authorities, elected representatives, the Deputy Commissioner of Sukkur, the Mayor of Sukkur, and the UC Chairman and Vice Chairman had neither visited the area to assess the situation nor taken practical measures to resolve the issue.

The protesters further alleged that diesel and oil supplied for the pumping stations were allegedly not being properly utilized by local officials. They also claimed that the Beco machine available for drainage cleaning and dealing with emergency situations often remained out of service.

According to the residents, the relevant employees were also unwilling to properly perform their duties, further worsening the drainage system.

The residents said they had approached the court about the drainage issue in Mirani Mohalla approximately a year ago. According to them, the court had ruled in their favor and ordered the installation of drainage motors and necessary work around the pumping station.

The protesters claimed that the administration installed the motors for only a few days and subsequently removed them, while the required work around the pumping station was also left incomplete.

The residents warned that if the drainage pumping stations in Mirani Mohalla were not restored, electricity was not immediately reinstated, and a permanent solution for sewage disposal was not provided, they would be forced to approach the court again.

The protesters appealed to the Sindh government, Sukkur Commissioner and Sukkur Mayor Arsalan Sheikh to immediately restore electricity to the drainage pumping stations, ensure the operation of the motors, remove the accumulated sewage water from the area, and permanently improve the pumping station system to relieve residents of their ongoing difficulties.
