SUKKUR : Women belonging to the Laghari community from the Garam Godi area of Sukkur staged a protest outside the Sukkur Press Club against what they alleged were police excesses, injustice, violation of the sanctity of their homes and the alleged detention of male family members.
The protesting women raised strong slogans against the alleged misconduct of the police and called upon senior authorities to take immediate notice of the matter.
According to the protesters, police personnel allegedly raided their homes, violated the sanctity of their privacy and entered their houses in connection with what they described as false allegations of drug-related offences. They alleged that women were subjected to severe physical abuse during the searches, while male members present in the houses were forcibly taken into custody.
The women further claimed that when they approached the concerned police station to obtain information about the detained men, police officials allegedly denied conducting any raid or arresting anyone.
Expressing serious concern, the protesters questioned the whereabouts of their male family members and demanded to know under which law they had allegedly been taken away if the police denied arresting them.
The protesters said the alleged actions of the police had caused severe mental distress, fear and insecurity among their families. They demanded an impartial investigation into the incident and called for all allegedly detained men to be immediately recovered and released if they were being held without lawful grounds.
They also demanded protection for women against alleged violence and police excesses and called for legal action against any officials found responsible for misconduct.
The protesting women appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Sindh Chief Minister, Inspector General of Sindh Police, DIG Sukkur, SSP Sukkur and other senior authorities to take immediate notice of the allegations, ensure justice and provide protection to their families.
The women said they respected law-enforcement agencies but maintained that any alleged unlawful entry into citizens’ homes, violation of the sanctity of the household and alleged physical abuse of citizens was unacceptable.
They warned that if their demands were not addressed promptly, they would be compelled to expand their protest.
