Four Bodies, Including Women and Child, Recovered from Manhole Near Mai Kolachi in Karachi

Karachi: A deeply disturbing incident has come to light in Karachi, where four bodies were recovered from a manhole near the Mai Kolachi area, raising serious concerns about public safety, crime, and law enforcement in the city. The discovery has shocked residents and prompted immediate action from senior police officials and the Sindh government.

According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Asad Raza, the bodies recovered include one adult man, two women, and one child. Preliminary assessments suggest that the bodies are approximately 10 to 15 days old. The condition of the remains indicates that the victims may have been subjected to violence before their deaths, adding a grave dimension to the already alarming incident.

Police officials stated that initial investigations have revealed visible signs of torture on the bodies. Moreover, blood stains were also found inside the manhole from which the bodies were recovered, suggesting that the victims may have been assaulted at or near the location before being dumped there. The presence of blood inside the manhole has strengthened suspicions of a brutal crime rather than an accidental death.

The incident came to light when locals noticed a foul smell emanating from a manhole near Mai Kolachi Road, a busy area connecting several parts of Karachi. Upon receiving information, police and rescue teams reached the spot and cordoned off the area. After opening the manhole, authorities discovered the decomposed bodies inside, prompting an immediate and large-scale response from law enforcement agencies.

According to the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kemari, the bodies were found in a badly mutilated condition. Due to the advanced stage of decomposition, the remains were shifted to a hospital for medico-legal examination. The ASP confirmed that the process of identifying the victims has been initiated, though it may take time due to the condition of the bodies. DNA profiling and other forensic methods are likely to be used to establish identities and determine the exact cause of death.

Police officials have not ruled out any possibilities and are investigating the case from multiple angles, including targeted killing, family-related disputes, and other criminal motives. Investigators are also examining missing persons reports filed over the past few weeks to see if they match the profiles of the recovered bodies. Nearby CCTV footage and mobile phone data are also expected to be reviewed as part of the investigation.

The horrifying discovery has sparked fear and outrage among residents of the area and across the city. Citizens have expressed serious concerns over law and order, questioning how such a heinous crime could go unnoticed for weeks in a major urban area. Social media platforms have also been flooded with calls for swift justice and accountability.

Taking immediate notice of the incident, Chief Minister of Sindh Murad Ali Shah directed the police and relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation. In his statement, the chief minister emphasized that all aspects of the case must be examined carefully to identify those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice.

“The protection of citizens’ lives and property is the foremost responsibility of the government,” Murad Ali Shah said. He assured that the Sindh government would provide justice to the affected families and would not tolerate negligence or delay in the investigation. The chief minister also instructed law enforcement agencies to submit a detailed report on the incident at the earliest.

The Sindh government has further directed senior police officials to personally supervise the investigation to ensure no loopholes remain. Authorities have also been asked to improve monitoring and security measures in vulnerable areas, particularly around underpasses, manholes, and deserted locations that can potentially be used for criminal activities.

Legal experts say the case could fall under multiple serious charges, including murder, torture, and concealment of evidence. If proven, those responsible could face severe punishment under Pakistan’s criminal laws. Human rights activists have also demanded that the investigation be conducted impartially and that the victims’ identities be made public as soon as possible to help families seeking missing loved ones.

This incident has once again highlighted longstanding issues related to urban safety in Karachi, including poor surveillance, inadequate lighting in certain areas, and limited monitoring of public infrastructure such as manholes and drainage systems. Experts argue that regular inspections and better coordination between municipal authorities and police could help prevent such crimes or at least ensure they are detected earlier.
