BANGKOK: A 24-year-old footballer was killed after being struck by lightning during a football match in Thailand.

According to foreign media reports, the tragic incident occurred at Santi Stadium in Sungai Kolok, southern Thailand, where a local tournament match under the Golok FA Cup was being played between teams from Thailand and Malaysia amid heavy rain.

During the match, lightning struck the field, leaving Thai player Saphuwan Awe critically injured. He was immediately provided medical assistance and shifted to a hospital, but he later died from his injuries.

The incident shocked players and spectators, while concerns were raised regarding safety measures during outdoor sporting events held in severe weather conditions.
