ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has released data showing the changes in prices of essential food items and utilities over the past year, highlighting significant inflation in some products and price reductions in others.
Items That Became More Expensive:
- Sugar: Up 16.32% – average price increased from Rs. 137.33 per kg to Rs. 159.74 per kg. At its peak in 2025, sugar reached Rs. 229 per kg.
- Wheat Flour (Atta): Up 22.56% – the price of a 20-kg bag rose from Rs. 1,794.93 to Rs. 2,199.85.
- Broiler Chicken: Up slightly from Rs. 409.22 per kg to Rs. 424.89 per kg.
- Beef: Increased 13.01%
- Jaggery (Gur): Increased 12.46%
- Bananas: Increased 11.24%
- Powdered Red Chili: Increased 10.31%
- Eggs: Increased 9.71%
- Milk Powder: Increased 9.51%
- Gas Charges: Increased sharply 29.85%
- Firewood: Increased 11.02%
- Mutton, Fresh Milk, Yogurt, and Ghee also saw price rises in 2025.
Items That Became Cheaper:
- Tomatoes: Down 74.92%
- Potatoes: Down 49.79%
- Garlic: Down 38.17%
- Chana Dal (Bengal Gram): Down 29.66%
- Onions: Down 29.23%
- Tea Leaves: Down 17.79%
- Moong Dal: Down 13.14%
- Masoor Dal: Down 6.62%
- Electricity Charges: Reduced by 6.87%
The PBS report shows a mixed trend, with basic staples like sugar, flour, and chicken becoming more expensive, while seasonal vegetables, pulses, and tea have become relatively cheaper. Utilities like gas have seen a significant increase, whereas electricity costs have slightly decreased.
