Muzaffarabad: The political landscape of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has entered a new phase of uncertainty as the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) intensifies efforts to bring about an in-house change in the region’s government. According to informed sources, the PPP leadership has established contact with the forward bloc within the legislative assembly to secure support for its plan to replace the current administration.
Reports suggest that the move is part of a broader strategy to realign political alliances in AJK following the shifting dynamics between federal coalition partners — the PPP and the PML-N. The PPP, which has already gained momentum in the region through recent power-sharing discussions, is now aiming to consolidate its position by winning over dissenting lawmakers from rival parties.
Sources reveal that Barrister Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, the former President of AJK and a key political figure, has become central to the evolving scenario. He has reportedly held multiple discussions with PPP intermediaries and has demanded a significant political role or a top constitutional post in the event of a new power setup.
Political observers believe that Barrister Sultan’s involvement could prove decisive, given his influence among several members of the legislative assembly who form part of the forward bloc — a group currently disenchanted with the government’s performance.
PPP insiders confirm that party leaders are working to ensure majority support before making a formal move. “Contacts have been established with lawmakers from both the forward bloc and independents,” a senior PPP source said. “Our objective is to form a stable coalition that reflects the people’s mandate.”
The development comes at a time when AJK’s political environment is already charged with speculation over possible shifts in alliances and leadership changes. The federal leadership of PPP, including Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, is said to be closely monitoring the situation and has given the green light for behind-the-scenes negotiations.
Meanwhile, PML-N’s AJK chapter is reportedly holding internal consultations to prevent defections and maintain its fragile grip on power. Senior PML-N figures fear that if a significant number of lawmakers cross the floor, the PPP-backed coalition could swiftly claim a majority.
Barrister Sultan’s demand for a key office — reportedly either the President of AJK or a senior advisory position with executive authority — has added a new layer of complexity to the talks. Sources indicate that the PPP is considering his proposal seriously, viewing his inclusion as a strategic move to neutralise opposition within the assembly.
