MATIARI: Police faced resistance from villagers during an anti-narcotics operation in a village near Matiari, where two suspected drug dealers were briefly detained before being freed by a crowd, according to police.
The incident took place in Memon Ki Wasi, a village located along the National Highway near Matiari. Police said they conducted a raid targeting suspected narcotics dealers and arrested two suspects during the operation.
According to police, shortly after the arrests, a large number of villagers, including men, women, and children, came out carrying sticks and allegedly confronted the police team.
Police said the crowd assaulted officers with sticks, forced the release of the detained suspects, and blocked the National Highway, disrupting traffic.
Following the incident, SHO Matiari Shams Khokhar arrived at the scene with additional police personnel. Police dispersed the crowd, reopened the highway to traffic, and closed roadside cabins in the village during the operation.
Speaking to the media, SHO Shams Khokhar said the police had gone to the village to take action against suspected drug traffickers when they came under attack by local residents.
“We dispersed the crowd and have intensified operations against narcotics dealers,” the SHO said.
