WASHINGTON: The United States has imposed a new round of sanctions targeting Iranian financial networks, even as media reports suggest that another round of indirect talks between Washington and Tehran could take place next week.
According to reports, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced fresh sanctions against Iranian financial networks as part of Washington’s continued pressure campaign on Iran.
The Treasury Department’s latest measures are aimed at restricting financial activities linked to Iran, although further details regarding the specific individuals or entities targeted were not immediately disclosed in the reports.
Meanwhile, a U.S.-based news website has claimed that a new round of U.S.-Iran negotiations is expected to be held next week. The report suggested that the talks could take place in Switzerland, which has frequently served as a venue for diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
However, Iranian officials have pushed back against suggestions that Tehran requested a new phase of negotiations.
A spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry said that Iran had not requested a new round of talks with the United States.
The spokesperson added that while Iran has agreed to receive visits from mediators, this should not be interpreted as a request by Tehran to resume negotiations.
“We have accepted the visit of mediators to Iran,” the spokesperson said, according to media reports, while reiterating that Iran had not sought a new negotiating round.
The developments come as diplomatic efforts surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and broader regional issues continue amid persistent tensions between Washington and Tehran.
While reports indicate that preparations may be underway for another round of indirect discussions, neither the United States nor Iran has officially confirmed the timing or location of any forthcoming negotiations.
The reports regarding the expected talks in Switzerland are based on claims by a U.S. news website and have not been independently confirmed by either government.
