BEIJING: Severe rainstorms and flooding in parts of China have reportedly forced hundreds of snakes and several crocodiles into residential areas, adding to the dangers faced by communities already affected by widespread flooding.

According to international media reports, Typhoon Mesak has caused extensive damage across several regions of China, triggering floods, infrastructure damage, and multiple accidents that have resulted in fatalities.

The situation has been particularly alarming in the southern Chinese city of Hengzhou, where heavy rainfall and rising floodwaters have not only disrupted daily life but also created widespread fear among residents.

Media reports said that floodwaters breached protective barriers surrounding several animal farms, allowing approximately 900 snakes to escape. Many of the reptiles were reportedly swept into nearby residential neighborhoods by the floodwaters.

In addition to the escaped snakes, several crocodiles were reportedly seen swimming through flooded areas after being carried away by the rising waters.

According to the reports, a large number of the escaped snakes are believed to be venomous, increasing the risk to residents and emergency workers.

Local media also reported that several people have been bitten by snakes during the flooding. Authorities have confirmed the death of one woman, who reportedly died after suffering a snakebite.

Emergency services are continuing rescue operations while also attempting to locate and capture the escaped animals to reduce the threat to public safety.

Authorities have urged residents in flood-affected areas to remain indoors where possible, avoid contact with floodwaters, and immediately report sightings of snakes or crocodiles to emergency responders.

The reports regarding the number of escaped animals and casualties are based on international media coverage and had not been independently verified at the time of publication.
