PM Directs Improvements in Power Transmission System to Reduce Line Losses

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to improve Pakistan’s electricity transmission system in order to significantly reduce line losses, as part of broader reforms in the energy sector. The directive came during a high-level meeting focused on addressing long-standing inefficiencies and challenges in the country’s power infrastructure.

During the اجلاس, the Prime Minister emphasized that providing relief and सुविधा to domestic consumers remains one of the government’s top priorities. He noted that excessive line losses not only place a financial burden on the national exchequer but also contribute to higher electricity tariffs for ordinary citizens, making it essential to tackle the issue on an urgent basis.

Line losses—often caused by outdated infrastructure, technical inefficiencies, and power theft—have been a persistent problem in Pakistan’s power sector. These losses reduce the amount of electricity that actually reaches end-users and result in billions of rupees in annual financial damage. The Prime Minister stressed that improving the transmission and distribution network would help ensure a more reliable and efficient supply of electricity across the country.

Shehbaz Sharif instructed relevant departments to adopt modern technologies and strengthen monitoring mechanisms to curb losses. He also called for better maintenance of existing infrastructure and timely upgrades to transmission lines and grid stations. According to officials, efforts may include the installation of advanced metering systems, improved load management practices, and stricter action against electricity theft.

The Prime Minister reiterated that reforms in the energy sector are critical for economic stability and sustainable growth. He highlighted that reducing inefficiencies would not only lower costs for consumers but also improve the overall performance of power distribution companies.

Officials briefed the meeting on ongoing initiatives and future plans aimed at enhancing transmission capacity and minimizing losses. The Prime Minister directed that progress on these measures be closely monitored and that tangible results be delivered within a defined timeframe.

The government has been under pressure to address energy sector issues, including high tariffs, circular debt, and unreliable supply. By focusing on reducing line losses, the administration aims to ease the burden on consumers while improving the financial health of the power sector.
