Iran has been elected as one of the vice presidents at a United Nations conference on the implementation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), triggering strong objections from the United States.
The decision was taken during the 11th conference on NPT enforcement, where 34 vice presidents from different countries were selected.
The U.S. delegation strongly opposed Iran’s appointment, with American representative Christopher Yeaw calling the move “an insult to the Non-Proliferation Treaty.”
In response, Iran’s representative Reza Najafi rejected the U.S. remarks, describing them as baseless and politically motivated. He said the United States, which is the only country to have used nuclear weapons, cannot position itself as a moral authority on nuclear non-proliferation.
