Member of the National Assembly Sher Afzal Marwat has announced that he will legally challenge the appointment of Sohail Afridi as the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, intensifying political tensions within the party ranks.
Speaking to Geo News, Sher Afzal Marwat said that the province is facing serious governance and administrative issues, alleging widespread deterioration in public services, particularly in the health sector. He claimed that there were irregularities in the purchase and sale of medicines at low prices in hospitals across the province.
Marwat stated that he had initially been advised by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur not to proceed with the challenge, but he has now decided to reject that advice and move forward with legal action against the appointment.
He further said that the decision to bring Sohail Afridi into a key leadership position was wrong and had contributed to internal divisions within the party. According to him, this move has “damaged party unity” and weakened its overall political strength.
The MNA also referred to past legal interpretations, arguing that decisions related to leadership appointments must comply with constitutional and judicial principles. He cited previous Supreme Court rulings to support his position regarding eligibility and authority in political matters.
Marwat added that he intends to contest the nomination in court, expressing confidence that the legal challenge could result in the reversal of the appointment. However, he clarified that his stance is not personal and is based on political and organizational concerns.
He further claimed that internal disagreements over leadership choices have created serious rifts within the party, suggesting that continued internal conflict could further weaken its structure. He warned that if the current situation continues, the party may face deeper fragmentation.
According to him, certain political groups within the party are also dissatisfied with the nomination process and are seeking changes in leadership decisions. He argued that restoring authority to key figures such as Barrister Gohar and Ali Amin Gandapur could help stabilize the situation.
Marwat also made broader political claims regarding party leadership dynamics, suggesting that internal power struggles have affected decision-making processes and overall party performance.
He concluded that, in his view, strengthening institutional leadership and addressing internal disputes is essential for political stability and future success.
The announcement is expected to further fuel political debate in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as legal and party-level discussions over leadership continue to unfold.
