Islamabad: Authorities have decided to accelerate the implementation of arrest warrants issued against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders who are wanted in various cases.
According to sources, the decision was taken after the arrest of PTI leader Hammad Azhar. Authorities have now decided to intensify efforts to execute previously issued warrants against other PTI leaders facing legal proceedings in different cases.
Sources said several PTI leaders are facing judicial arrest warrants in connection with various cases, including the November 2024 D-Chowk protest. The authorities are expected to take further steps for the arrest of those named in the cases.
According to the sources, the list of wanted PTI leaders includes Junaid Akbar, Abdul Ghani, Shibli Faraz, Murad Saeed, Zartaj Gul, Amir Masood Mughal, Dr Amjad Ali, Meena Khan Afridi, Ali Amin Gandapur and Umar Tanveer Butt.
The sources said law-enforcement agencies are expected to coordinate with the relevant authorities to implement the court-issued warrants. However, the exact timing and locations of the possible arrests have not been disclosed.
The development comes amid ongoing legal proceedings against several PTI leaders and workers over their alleged involvement in protests and other cases. Several party leaders have previously faced arrests, warrants and court proceedings in connection with political demonstrations.
Authorities have not yet issued a detailed official statement confirming a wider arrest operation. Any arrests will be carried out in accordance with the relevant court orders and legal procedures.
The possible implementation of the warrants could further increase political and legal pressure on PTI leadership. The party has repeatedly maintained that legal cases against its leaders and workers are politically motivated, while authorities provided; the allegations and warrant status should be treated as claims attributed to the have maintained that action is being taken under the law.
The situation is expected to develop further as law-enforcement agencies move to implement the outstanding warrants and courts continue proceedings in the cases.
