Researchers are investigating a boat-shaped structure near Mount Ararat in Türkiye, saying the site could potentially be linked to the Ark of Prophet Noah (peace be upon him).
According to a report by British media, an international team of experts is studying the Durupinar site near Mount Ararat, where a large boat-shaped formation has attracted attention for decades.
Researchers say they detected carbon and other organic material in soil samples collected from the site. Similar material was reportedly not found in soil samples taken only a few yards away.
According to the researchers, the findings could indicate the presence of organic material that may have resulted from ancient wood remains. However, no actual pieces of wood have been recovered so far.
New ground-penetrating radar scans have also reportedly identified underground formations that the researchers say do not appear to match a natural geological structure.
Speculation that the site could be the location of Noah’s Ark dates back to 1959, when aerial photographs of the area drew attention to the unusual formation.
Local reports say that heavy rains and earthquakes in the region in May 1948 caused surrounding soil to wash away, exposing the mysterious structure, which was reportedly first noticed by a shepherd.
The research team collected around 1,000 soil samples from different parts of the area and examined them for evidence of carbon and other organic materials.
Radar technology was also used to examine structures located around 20 feet below the surface.
According to the researchers, the soil samples contained organic material and potassium, which they say could be consistent with the remains of decayed ancient wood.
However, the team acknowledged that the findings do not prove with certainty that the structure is an ancient wooden vessel. They said there remains a possibility that the material has another explanation.
The same team announced the results of its radar survey of the region in August 2026. Researchers are continuing to analyze the data and are conducting drilling at specific locations to determine what lies beneath the unusual formation.
The researchers said they believe the Ark of Prophet Noah could be located at the site, but emphasized that their findings are still preliminary and do not yet provide conclusive proof that the structure is actually Noah’s Ark.
