PESHAWAR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued an alert for the province’s upper districts over the potential risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), warning that rising temperatures and intermittent rainfall could accelerate glacier melting and increase water levels in glacial lakes.
According to the advisory, hot weather conditions combined with rainfall expected from the night of August 31 through September 4 could accelerate the melting of glaciers.
The resulting increase in the volume and water levels of glacial lakes may heighten the risk of sudden flooding and powerful water flows downstream.
The alert covers Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Swat, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan and Mansehra, with the concerned district administrations directed to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
