Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has said that the pilot project for the introduction of a digital parking system in designated parking lots of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is nearing completion and is expected to become operational within the next few days.
In a statement on social media, Murtaza Wahab clarified that the KMC has already abolished the collection of parking fees on all KMC roads, adding that the new automated receipt system is being introduced only at designated parking lots.
According to the mayor, the digital system is aimed at bringing greater transparency to parking fee collection and protecting citizens from being charged additional or unauthorised amounts by contractors.
He said the automated receipt mechanism would also ensure that all parking transactions are properly recorded, reducing the possibility of revenue leakage and preventing any amount from being misappropriated.

The Smart Parking system will include digital ticketing and cashless payment options, real-time parking availability updates, enhanced security and monitoring in covered areas.
“This initiative will not only address Karachi’s growing parking demands but also mark a shift towards digital civic infrastructure — a long-term investment in the city’s future,” said a KMC spokesperson.
