Karachi: An Additional District and Sessions Court in Karachi has granted pre-arrest bail to Abdullah, the brother of young businessman Mir Raza’s business partner, in a case related to the investigation into Raza’s disappearance/death.
The court granted Abdullah interim bail until September 1 and issued notices to the investigating officer and the complainant in the case.
The court also directed the applicant to submit surety bonds worth Rs100,000.
Earlier, Mir Raza’s business partner Muhammad Ahmed had also obtained interim pre-arrest bail from the court.
According to Abdullah’s lawyer, the applicant used to supply chocolates to Mir Raza as part of his business dealings. The lawyer told the court that on the night Mir Raza left his home, Abdullah had spoken to him by telephone at around 3:30 a.m.
The defence counsel further argued that the police were allegedly harassing the applicant despite there being no justification for such treatment.
According to the lawyer, Abdullah and Mir Raza were in regular contact because of their work, and the two would generally speak at around the same time after completing their respective business activities.
The defence maintained that the phone contact between the two men was connected to their normal business relationship and should not, by itself, be treated as evidence of wrongdoing.
The court, while granting interim relief, summoned the relevant parties and sought their response before further proceedings.
The development comes as investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding Mir Raza’s case and the people who had business or personal contact with him around the time of the incident.
The court’s decision to grant interim pre-arrest bail does not amount to a finding of innocence or guilt. Further proceedings will determine the legal position of the applicant as the investigation progresses.
