U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly spoke by phone with Pakistan’s Army Chief and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, last week, according to Reuters.
Sources told Reuters that Trump’s main request was for Pakistan to use its influence to convince Iran to return to the negotiating table.
The call reportedly took place before Field Marshal Munir’s visit to Tehran, where he met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior officials.
During the visit, Pakistan discussed ways to reduce tensions, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and find a peaceful solution to the conflict.
Pakistan has good relations with both Iran and the United States, which gives Islamabad an opportunity to help with dialogue between the two countries.
Reuters reported that the United States wanted Pakistan to use its relationship with Iran to encourage further negotiations.
Pakistan has also said that recent talks with Iran made important progress and could help create a path toward lasting peace.
The White House has not publicly confirmed the reported conversation between Trump and Field Marshal Munir.
