The Punjab government has divided the Lahore prisons region and established a new Gujranwala region comprising five jails, according to a notification issued by the Home Department.
The notification was issued following approval of a summary moved by the Home Department on the orders of the Punjab governor.
Under the new arrangement, Central Jail Gujranwala, District Jail Narowal, District Jail Sialkot, District Jail Hafizabad and Sub-Jail Pindi Bhattian have been placed under the newly created Gujranwala region.
The new region will be headed by a Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, while a new DIG Gujranwala is expected to be appointed soon, officials said.
The five prisons were previously part of the Lahore region.
Officials said the creation of the Gujranwala region is aimed at improving prison administration and strengthening supervision of jails in the area.
