ISLAMABAD: The federal government has filed a review petition against the Supreme Court’s decision to shift Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to a private hospital.
The review petition was filed by the Chief Commissioner Islamabad through the Advocate General Islamabad. The government has asked the Supreme Court to reconsider its order regarding the transfer of Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital.
According to the petition, the Supreme Court issued an interim order on August 18 directing that the PTI founder be shifted to Shifa Hospital. The federal government has argued that the order goes beyond the court’s jurisdiction and should therefore be reviewed.
The development comes a day after the Supreme Court ordered that Imran Khan be transferred to a private hospital for medical treatment. The court also directed the authorities to form a medical board to examine his health and provide recommendations regarding his treatment.
The Supreme Court’s decision had been welcomed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. The party said it respected the court’s decision and would follow the order. PTI also said that it would not use Imran Khan’s medical condition for political purposes.
Meanwhile, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar had indicated that the government was considering filing a review petition against the decision to transfer Imran Khan to a private hospital.
The government’s position is that Imran Khan should be medically examined and treated at a government hospital rather than being shifted to a private facility.
The review petition now asks the Supreme Court to reconsider its earlier order. The government has maintained that the matter should be handled within the legal and administrative framework and that the medical treatment of the PTI founder should be properly assessed.
The case has attracted significant political attention because Imran Khan remains one of the country’s most prominent political leaders. His supporters have repeatedly raised concerns about his health and medical treatment, while the government has maintained that all necessary medical care should be provided according to official procedures.
The Supreme Court will now decide whether to accept the government’s review petition and reconsider its earlier interim order.
The government’s request does not automatically change the Supreme Court’s previous decision. Until the court issues a fresh order, the legal status of its earlier directions will remain subject to the court’s proceedings.
The matter is expected to remain an important issue in the coming days as the government and PTI continue to present different positions regarding Imran Khan’s medical treatment and the appropriate hospital for his examination and care.
