Lahore: Body of Infant Found in Sewer Line; CM Orders Strict Action

Lahore: The body of a 10-month-old girl, Rida Fatima, who fell into a sewer line near Data Darbar, has been recovered from the Outfall Road sewer line, authorities confirmed on Sunday. The tragic incident sparked widespread concern over negligence and safety lapses in the city’s sewer and drainage infrastructure.

According to Rescue 1122 officials, the body of the infant was recovered after hours of search and rescue operations. The incident also involved the child’s mother, whose body had already been retrieved from the sewer line in earlier efforts. Rescue teams worked tirelessly at multiple locations to locate the child, highlighting both the challenges posed by poorly maintained drainage systems and the dedication of emergency personnel.

In response to the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz ordered strict action against the authorities responsible for the negligence. Upon returning from Bhakkar, the Chief Minister convened an emergency meeting at the airport, instructing officials to submit an impartial fact-finding report immediately. The CM stressed that lapses leading to such avoidable tragedies would not be tolerated and accountability would be ensured.

The preliminary investigation report provides a timeline of the incident. According to the findings, the mother, child, and the child’s father were seen shopping near Data Darbar at 6:47 PM, arriving at Data Darbar itself by 7:22 PM. Around 7:30 PM, they were observed moving towards the Old Paranda Market. Within minutes, at 7:32 PM, Rescue 1122 received a call reporting the fall of the mother and child into the sewer line. The rescue team reportedly reached the site within four minutes of the call.

The report also notes that the mother-in-law of the affected family was seen calling for help and alerting bystanders, helping authorities respond quickly. Despite the rapid arrival of rescue personnel, the conditions of the sewer system and the flow of water made the operation extremely difficult, especially for a child of such a young age.

This tragic incident has highlighted serious gaps in urban infrastructure and public safety measures in Lahore, particularly in high-traffic commercial areas such as Data Darbar and surrounding markets. It has raised urgent calls for the inspection and upgrading of sewer lines to prevent such accidents in the future.

Authorities have assured that a full inquiry will be conducted, and steps will be taken to improve public safety measures, including better monitoring of sewer lines and drainage systems in urban areas. The Chief Minister reiterated that the safety of citizens, especially children, is of paramount importance, and responsible officials will face strict action.

The Lahore sewer tragedy has sparked renewed discussions on urban safety, infrastructure maintenance, and accountability in city administration, with residents demanding immediate reforms to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
