Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed support for the recent U.S. military operation in Venezuela.
In a statement regarding the situation in Venezuela, Meloni said that the U.S. military action is justified and described it as a defensive measure.
She added that Italy does not recognize the self-declared electoral victory of Venezuela’s president and that her government supports a democratic transfer of power in Venezuela.
However, the Italian Prime Minister also clarified that military intervention is not a solution to end authoritarian rule, emphasizing that the safety of the Italian community residing in Venezuela is a top priority.
Meloni stated that she does not support foreign military force to change governments, but said that defensive intervention is justified against hybrid attacks that threaten security.
Separately, the German Chancellor commented that it will take time to legally assess the U.S. operation in Venezuela.
