Federal Cabinet Approves Visa Clearance System on Interior Ministry’s Recommendation

Islamabad: The federal cabinet has approved the Visa Clearance System on the recommendation of the Ministry of Interior, marking an important step toward improving transparency, efficiency, and security in the visa process for Pakistanis traveling abroad. The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, according to an official statement released after the meeting.

Along with the Visa Clearance System, the federal cabinet also approved the National Cannabis Control and Regulatory Policy 2025. Both measures are part of the government’s broader agenda to introduce institutional reforms, modernize regulatory frameworks, and promote economic development in key sectors.

According to the cabinet communiqué, the primary objective of the Visa Clearance System is to make the process of obtaining visas more transparent, secure, and user-friendly for Pakistani citizens seeking to travel abroad. The system is designed to reduce delays, eliminate unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles, and ensure better coordination among relevant government departments. Officials believe the new mechanism will help address long-standing complaints by citizens regarding inefficiencies and lack of clarity in visa-related procedures.

The statement noted that overseas travel has become increasingly important for Pakistanis for purposes such as employment, education, medical treatment, and business. In this context, a streamlined and reliable visa clearance system is essential to protect citizens from exploitation, fraud, and procedural confusion. The government aims to ensure that Pakistanis can access visa-related services through a more structured and accountable process.

In addition to visa reforms, the cabinet approved the National Cannabis Control and Regulatory Policy 2025. According to the official statement, the policy aims to promote the regulated use of plant-based resources, particularly cannabis, for pharmaceutical and textile industries. The government believes that a well-regulated framework will allow Pakistan to benefit economically from the controlled use of cannabis-derived products while ensuring compliance with international standards and domestic laws.

Officials stated that the policy focuses on industrial and medicinal applications rather than recreational use. The pharmaceutical sector is expected to benefit from cannabis-based medicinal products, while the textile sector may utilize hemp-based materials for manufacturing. The government sees this policy as an opportunity to attract investment, create employment, and diversify export-oriented industries, while maintaining strict regulatory oversight.

The federal cabinet also ratified decisions taken by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) in its meeting held on December 18. These decisions relate to ongoing economic management, fiscal measures, and policy interventions aimed at stabilizing the economy and supporting key sectors. Although specific details of the ECC decisions were not elaborated in the statement, their approval by the cabinet gives them formal legal backing.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also addressed the political situation in the country. He reiterated that the government remains committed to political harmony and dialogue with all political parties. The Prime Minister said that his government continues to uphold a principled stance in favor of negotiations to reduce political polarization and promote democratic stability.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that, in his personal capacity as well as officially, he has extended invitations for dialogue to all political parties on multiple occasions. He emphasized that political differences should be resolved through discussion and consensus rather than confrontation and deadlock. According to him, dialogue is essential for addressing the country’s complex challenges, including economic recovery, governance reforms, and social stability.

However, the Prime Minister also issued a clear warning, saying that the government will not allow any attempt to disrupt law and order under the guise of negotiations. He stressed that while the door to dialogue remains open, maintaining peace and public safety is non-negotiable. “No effort to undermine peace and stability in the name of talks will be allowed to succeed,” he said.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid ongoing political tensions and debates over negotiations between the government and opposition parties. By reaffirming both openness to dialogue and firmness on law and order, the government appears to be signaling a balanced approach aimed at preventing instability while encouraging political engagement.

Cabinet members present at the meeting expressed confidence that the newly approved policies would contribute positively to governance and economic growth. The Visa Clearance System, in particular, was described as a citizen-centric reform that aligns with the government’s broader digitalization and transparency goals. Officials said further details regarding the implementation mechanism, timelines, and coordination with relevant departments would be shared in due course.

Analysts believe that if effectively implemented, the Visa Clearance System could significantly reduce complaints related to delays and lack of transparency in overseas travel processes. At the same time, the National Cannabis Control and Regulatory Policy 2025 is being viewed as a potentially transformative step for non-traditional sectors, provided that strong regulatory controls are enforced.

Overall, the federal cabinet’s decisions reflect the government’s focus on administrative reform, economic diversification, and political engagement. As Pakistan continues to navigate economic pressures and political challenges, policymakers are emphasizing institutional strengthening and dialogue as key pillars for long-term stability and growth.
