The Sindh government has written a letter to the federal government seeking assistance in the arrest of suspects involved in extortion in Karachi who are currently residing abroad.
Following complaints from builders and traders in Karachi, actions against extortionists have been intensified. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah stated that extortionists operating from overseas would not be spared and that the provincial government has formally contacted the federal government in this regard.
The chief minister said the government is actively working on complaints received from builders and business owners and expressed confidence that, as in the past, success will again be achieved in the fight against extortion.
Meanwhile, SSP SIU Dr. Imran said that operations against extortionists are being carried out on a daily basis. He revealed that more than 50 extortionists have been arrested so far this year, while approximately 170 complaints have been received.
He further stated that on Friday morning, an extortionist was killed in an encounter. Data recovered from the suspect’s mobile phone included phone numbers of various traders as well as evidence showing that extortion demands had been made.
Dr. Imran added that out of the 10 cases highlighted by the builders’ representative body ABAD, FIRs were registered in only three cases, while five incidents were never reported. He said that two cases occurred only a few days ago and work on them has already been initiated.
