LAHORE: Pakistan’s Olympic gold medalist Arshad Nadeem says he is fully prepared to defend his Commonwealth Games javelin title and is determined to recreate the historic success he achieved at the 2022 Games.
Nadeem won the gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with a record-breaking throw, becoming one of Pakistan’s most celebrated athletes. As he prepares for the upcoming edition of the Games, the star javelin thrower says he is in a similar physical condition to the one that helped him make history four years ago.
Speaking to reporters after his final training session at Punjab Stadium in Lahore, Nadeem expressed confidence in his preparations.
“I have prepared well for the Commonwealth Games. Before every major event, I like to compete in an international competition because it helps me assess my strength and overall readiness,” he said.
As part of his preparations, Nadeem is scheduled to depart for Switzerland to participate in an international athletics competition before the Commonwealth Games. He believes the event will provide valuable competitive experience and help fine-tune his performance ahead of the major championship.
Reflecting on his previous success, the Olympic champion said the memories of the 2022 Commonwealth Games remain fresh.
“When I broke the Commonwealth Games record in 2022, I was in excellent form, and I believe I am in a similar position now,” he said.
Nadeem acknowledged, however, that defending his title brings additional pressure.
“It has been four years since I became the champion, so naturally there is pressure to perform again and achieve something special,” he remarked.
Despite the expectations, Nadeem said his greatest competition has always been with himself.
“My real competition is with myself. I want to improve my own performance every time I compete,” he said.
He also noted that the level of competition at the upcoming Games is expected to be stronger, mentioning that a Sri Lankan javelin thrower has recently produced an impressive performance.
“The competition will be tough this time, but I am fully prepared for it,” he added.
The 2024 Olympic gold medalist said that pressure is an inevitable part of competing at the highest level.
“There is always pressure when you step into the field. The important thing is to control that pressure and focus on your performance,” Nadeem said.
He emphasized that winning and defending the Commonwealth Games title holds great significance in his sporting career and remains one of his primary objectives.
Nadeem also highlighted a milestone in Pakistan’s athletics history, saying he became the first Pakistani track and field athlete to qualify directly for the Olympic Games, a feat that reflects years of dedication and hard work.
Concluding his remarks, the national hero requested prayers from his supporters.
“I request my fans to pray that Allah keeps me fit and healthy so that I can continue producing the kind of throws I have been delivering,” he said.
Arshad Nadeem’s achievements have transformed athletics in Pakistan, inspiring a new generation of athletes and bringing international recognition to the country’s track and field program. As he prepares to defend his Commonwealth crown, expectations are high that the star javelin thrower will once again challenge for gold and add another memorable chapter to his remarkable career.
