Lahore: The Punjab government has formally approved a special compensation package for the families of 17 police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Punjab’s Minister for Law, Malik Sohaib Ahmad.
According to details, the meeting reviewed cases of police officials who embraced martyrdom while performing their duties. After deliberations, approval was granted for financial assistance and residential benefits under the “Shuhada (Martyrs) Package”.
Announcing the decision, Malik Sohaib Ahmad confirmed that under Package Two, the heirs of Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) will receive Rs 5 million, a house, and additional benefits. Similarly, under the same package, the families of constables and head constables will be entitled to Rs 4 million, a house, and related facilities.
The minister further explained that under Package Three, heirs of martyred constables and traffic wardens will receive Rs 3.5 million along with other benefits. Importantly, the government has also decided to amend the rules of Package Three so that the heirs in this category may also be provided houses, in addition to cash compensation. The revised rules will soon be placed before the Punjab Cabinet for formal approval.
Malik Sohaib Ahmad emphasized that the government recognizes the immense sacrifices rendered by police personnel in ensuring the safety and security of citizens. He stated that it is the government’s moral and constitutional responsibility to look after the families of those who have laid down their lives for the nation. “No financial package can ever match the value of a martyr’s sacrifice, but it is our duty to ensure that their families do not face economic hardship,” he added.
Observers note that the approval of this package comes at a time when the role of law enforcement agencies in combating terrorism, violent crime, and maintaining public order has been under increasing strain. Providing such packages not only strengthens the morale of serving officers but also signals the government’s commitment to valuing and honoring the sacrifices of its frontline defenders.
The Punjab Police hierarchy has long demanded streamlined and uniform compensation structures for martyrs across different ranks, arguing that all police employees who die in the line of duty contribute equally to the protection of the public. The latest decision to extend housing benefits even to Package Three families is being seen as a step toward greater equity and recognition of sacrifice, regardless of rank.
With this approval, the families of 17 martyred personnel will now benefit from substantial financial assistance and housing support, providing them with stability and security in the absence of their loved ones. Police officials have welcomed the move, expressing hope that the Punjab Cabinet will swiftly endorse the proposed amendments to Package Three rules, thereby institutionalizing these enhanced benefits for future cases as well.
