SUKKUR: Transport authorities in Sukkur have launched a crackdown against transport operators for failing to reduce fares despite the recent decrease in petroleum product prices and for violating officially approved fare schedules.

The enforcement action was carried out following directives from Sindh Senior Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon, the Secretary of Transport, the Commissioner of Sukkur, and the Deputy Commissioner of Sukkur.

Acting on these instructions, RTA Secretary Fayyaz Ahmed Mangi and Assistant Commissioner Pano Aqil Urwa-tul-Wusqa, accompanied by their teams, conducted inspections at various transport points, including the wagon stand in Pano Aqil.

During the operation, officials inspected coaches, passenger wagons, and other public transport vehicles to ensure compliance with the revised fare structure. Several transport operators were found charging passengers more than the officially prescribed fares.

Authorities imposed fines on transporters found violating the fare regulations. In addition, passengers who had been overcharged were refunded the excess amounts collected from them, with officials returning thousands of rupees to affected commuters.

Speaking during the operation, the officials emphasized that transport operators must pass on the benefit of reduced petroleum prices to the public rather than continuing to charge fares fixed before the fuel price reduction.

They warned that the administration would not tolerate the collection of outdated or excessive fares and said strict action would continue against transporters violating government directives.

The officials reiterated that the purpose of the campaign is to ensure that the financial relief resulting from lower fuel prices reaches the public and that transport operators comply fully with the fare schedules approved by the transport authorities.

They added that inspections and enforcement actions will continue across the district to protect passengers from overcharging and to ensure transparency in public transport fare collection.
