LAHORE: Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has said that his batting philosophy is always guided by the requirements of the team, emphasizing that he is prepared to accelerate his scoring whenever the match situation demands.
Speaking during a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) program, Babar explained that he does not follow a fixed batting style but instead adapts his approach according to the circumstances of the game and what is best for the team.
“My mindset while batting is always based on the team’s needs,” Babar said. “If the situation requires quick scoring, I play aggressively. If the team needs stability, I focus on building the innings.”
The Pakistan skipper also described leading the national side as one of the greatest honors of his cricketing career.
“Captaining Pakistan has always been a privilege for me,” he said. “It is a responsibility that I value immensely, and I always strive to give my best for the team and the country.”
Reflecting on his previous experiences as captain, Babar said he has learned valuable lessons over the years and intends to use those experiences to become a more effective leader.
“I have learned a great deal from my past experiences,” he said. “This time I will lead the team with better planning, greater clarity, and a more positive mindset.”
The right-handed batter noted that leadership naturally improves with experience, explaining that captains develop a better understanding of decision-making as they spend more time in the role.
“With time, maturity and clarity come into captaincy,” Babar remarked. “Every experience teaches you something new, and those lessons help you make better decisions in the future.”
Babar added that he regularly reviews the decisions he has made as captain, analyzing both successes and mistakes to improve his leadership skills.
“I always evaluate the decisions I have taken as captain and try to learn from them,” he said. “Self-assessment is important because it helps you grow both as a player and as a leader.”
The Pakistan captain also stressed the importance of supporting younger players, particularly when they face pressure during international competition.
“My effort is always to stand by young players during difficult times,” he said. “International cricket is a game of pressure, and every player needs encouragement and confidence to perform at the highest level.”
According to Babar, creating a positive environment within the dressing room is essential for the development of emerging cricketers. He believes experienced players have a responsibility to mentor newcomers and help them adjust to the demands of international cricket.
He said confidence plays a major role in a player’s performance and that backing teammates through challenging phases can make a significant difference to their progress and consistency.
Babar also emphasized the importance of teamwork, saying that cricket is a collective effort in which every player contributes to achieving success.
“Our focus is always on playing as a unit,” he said. “Individual performances are important, but winning matches requires contributions from everyone in the team.”
The star batter expressed optimism about Pakistan’s future, saying the squad possesses a good blend of experienced players and talented youngsters capable of performing well at the highest level.
