Islamabad: Internet speeds in Pakistan are expected to improve significantly over the next 12 to 18 months.

During a meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Information Technology, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication confirmed that three new submarine cables will connect Pakistan to the global network within this timeframe. Officials informed the committee that agreements for all three cables have already been finalized.

According to ministry representatives, the new submarine cables will link Pakistan directly to Europe, reducing reliance on the country’s limited existing routes and strengthening the nation’s internet infrastructure. This step is expected not only to enhance international connectivity but also to improve the speed and quality of online services.

Zarar Hashim Khan, Secretary of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, stated that these projects would significantly expand bandwidth capacity, ensuring a more stable and reliable internet service for users across Pakistan.

Committee member Sadiq Memon raised concerns over recent internet disruptions. In response, IT officials assured him that the arrival of new submarine cables will resolve long-term connectivity challenges and bring substantial improvements to online services.

This development is seen as a crucial step toward modernizing Pakistan’s digital landscape, promoting e-commerce, enhancing cloud-based services, and improving overall user experience nationwide.
