LAHORE: Two police officials have been detained on suspicion of having links with the assailants involved in two terrorist attacks that left three policemen dead in Lahore, police sources said on Friday.

According to the sources, an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and a constable were taken into custody after investigators found photographs on social media allegedly showing them with the suspected terrorists.

Meanwhile, police have identified a third suspect believed to have been involved in the attacks. Investigators said the suspect belongs to the Bagh area of Azaad Kashmir and remains at large, with efforts under way to trace and arrest him.

According to the police investigation, the suspect had separated from a father-and-son duo after reaching the Ravi Riyan drain. Fresh footage of the suspected attackers has also emerged during the investigation. The video appears to show all three suspects walking through a street while carrying weapons.

Case registered

Lahore police have registered a case under terrorism, murder, attempted murder and other relevant provisions over the shooting of police personnel in Nawan Kot. The FIR was lodged on the complaint of Sub-Inspector Mohsin Shehzad. According to the FIR, three suspects armed with Kalashnikov rifles opened fire on officials deployed on security duty, also injuring a passer-by. While fleeing, the suspects allegedly snatched a weapon from a security guard and escaped after commandeering a Lahore Waste Management Company vehicle. The FIR added that the attackers also damaged another government vehicle while firing during their escape.

Police officials said investigations into the attacks and the suspects’ alleged network are continuing.

The latest developments follow an attack in Lahore’s Badami Bagh area in which two policemen were killed and three others injured during a raid to arrest a proclaimed offender.

Three policemen killed

The incident occurred at Peshay Khan Chowk, within the jurisdiction of Larri Adda Police Station, when suspects opened fire on a police team. Sub-Inspector Adeel Ashiq and Head Constable Asad were killed in the attack, while the assailants managed to flee. Police subsequently cordoned off the area, launched a search operation and began collecting evidence from the scene.

Lahore DIG Operations Faisal Kamran later identified the prime suspect as Rehan Butt, while efforts continued to identify and trace other people believed to be involved. Police said Sub-Inspector Adeel had previously registered a case against Rehan Butt in 2024 over alleged death threats. The Punjab police chief directed investigators to use all available resources to arrest those responsible.
