Peshawar: At least seven people were killed and three others injured in two roadside bomb explosions in the Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday, according to local authorities.
The deadly incident took place in the Marka Bera area of Bannu, where explosives planted along a roadside detonated, targeting a passenger vehicle traveling toward the city. The attacks have once again highlighted the security challenges facing parts of northwestern Pakistan.
According to District Police Officer (DPO) Yasir Afridi, the first explosion occurred when a passenger van passed over or near an improvised explosive device (IED) planted on the roadside. The powerful blast struck the vehicle, resulting in the deaths of five passengers on the spot and causing injuries to several others.
Emergency responders and local residents rushed to the scene to assist the victims and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities. However, while rescue efforts were underway, a second explosion occurred in the same vicinity, causing further casualties and panic among those present.
DPO Afridi said the second blast claimed the lives of two individuals involved in the rescue operation, bringing the total death toll to seven. The subsequent explosion also damaged a vehicle that was present near the scene at the time.
Authorities confirmed that three people sustained injuries in the attacks and were immediately shifted to a hospital for medical treatment. Hospital officials reported that the injured victims were receiving care, although no further details regarding their condition were immediately released.
Police and security officials quickly cordoned off the area following the second explosion and launched a search operation to ensure that no additional explosive devices remained hidden nearby. Bomb disposal teams were called to the site to inspect the area and collect evidence.
