KARACHI: A controversy has emerged at Karachi’s Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) after a woman and her family alleged that she was forced to give birth in a washroom due to negligence and delayed medical attention by hospital staff. However, the hospital administration has strongly denied the claims, stating that the delivery took place inside the labor room under medical supervision.
The incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media after videos related to the case went viral, raising concerns about the quality of healthcare services and patient care at one of Pakistan’s largest public-sector hospitals.
Family Alleges Four-Hour Wait Led to Bathroom Delivery
According to the woman and her relatives, she arrived at the hospital experiencing labor pains and waited for several hours without receiving adequate medical attention.
The family claimed that despite repeatedly seeking assistance from doctors and medical staff, the patient remained unattended for approximately four hours. They alleged that the delay resulted in the woman giving birth in a washroom located within the gynecology ward.
Relatives further stated that female members of the family had to assist the woman during childbirth because no medical personnel were present at the time. They accused the hospital staff of negligence and failing to respond promptly to the patient’s condition.
The allegations quickly gained attention after videos began circulating online. In one of the clips, the woman can reportedly be seen describing the events surrounding the birth, while another video allegedly shows the washroom where the child was born.
Hospital Rejects Claims
In response to the growing controversy, Jinnah Hospital issued an official statement rejecting the allegations and describing reports of a bathroom delivery as inaccurate.
According to the hospital spokesperson, the patient, identified as Nadia, wife of Akram, was attended to immediately upon arrival at the gynecology emergency department.
The administration stated that doctors conducted a medical examination and clinical assessment soon after her admission. Based on her condition, the medical team decided that a normal delivery would be the most appropriate course of action.
The hospital maintained that the woman delivered a healthy baby in the labor room at 2:50 a.m., not in a washroom as claimed by the family.
Medical Complications Cited by Hospital
Hospital officials also revealed that the patient had certain high-risk medical complications that required close observation.
According to the statement, medical examinations indicated a low platelet count and other abnormal laboratory parameters. Because of these concerns, doctors reportedly kept the patient under strict medical supervision throughout the treatment process.
The administration emphasized that all necessary medical procedures were followed and that the patient received appropriate care from the attending healthcare team.
Officials further claimed that after the delivery, the patient’s family removed her from the hospital against medical advice, despite recommendations from doctors to continue monitoring her condition.
Emergency Staff Were Handling Multiple Critical Cases
The hospital spokesperson noted that emergency medical teams were highly active throughout the night and were simultaneously managing several serious cases.
According to the administration, doctors and nurses were attending to multiple emergency situations, including cesarean section procedures and patients requiring blood transfusions.
Hospital authorities argued that despite the heavy workload, staff remained fully engaged in providing care to patients and rejected suggestions that the woman had been ignored.
Inquiry Committee Formed
Given the public attention surrounding the case, the Executive Director of JPMC has ordered a formal investigation.
The hospital announced the formation of an inquiry committee tasked with reviewing all aspects of the incident and determining the facts. The committee will examine medical records, staff accounts, and any available evidence related to the allegations.
Officials stated that the findings of the inquiry will help establish whether proper medical procedures were followed and whether any shortcomings occurred during the patient’s treatment.
The administration added that further action, if required, will be taken based on the committee’s recommendations.
Renewed Concerns About Public Healthcare
The incident has once again highlighted broader concerns regarding healthcare services in public hospitals across Pakistan. Public-sector medical institutions often face challenges such as overcrowding, staff shortages, limited resources, and increasing patient loads.
Critics argue that such pressures can affect the quality of care and lead to delays in treatment, while healthcare administrators maintain that medical personnel continue to work under difficult conditions to provide services to thousands of patients every day.
As the inquiry proceeds, both the patient’s family and hospital authorities are standing by their versions of events. The investigation is expected to determine whether the allegations of negligence are supported by evidence or whether the delivery occurred as described by the hospital administration.
