SUKKUR: A protest demonstration was held outside the Sukkur Press Club after a young woman allegedly died due to medical negligence during delivery at the PPHI Unit located in Nasirabad, Site Area Sukkur. The victim’s family members and people belonging to the Sheikh community demanded a transparent inquiry into the incident and strict action against those responsible.
A large number of protesters, including Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party district president Asghar Ali alias Nomi Sindhi, party workers, relatives of the deceased 30-year-old Shazia Sheikh wife of Ghulam Yaseen Sheikh, and members of the Sheikh community participated in the protest.
Among the protesters were Ghulam Nabi Sheikh, Abdul Qayyum Sheikh, Rukhsar Sheikh, and others.
According to the protesters, Shazia Sheikh was brought to the Nasirabad PPHI Unit on May 25 for childbirth, where Dr. Saira conducted a normal delivery. The family claimed that after the delivery, the doctor congratulated them on the birth of a baby boy and informed them that both mother and child were in good condition and that the patient would soon be shifted to the ward.
However, the family alleged that despite waiting for nearly one and a half hours, Shazia Sheikh was not moved to the ward. When they inquired about her condition, the doctor and other staff members allegedly left without giving any satisfactory response.
As the situation became critical, the family shifted her to Civil Hospital Sukkur, where doctors reportedly informed them that her condition was extremely serious and that it was no longer possible to save her life.
The protesters further claimed that a senior doctor at Civil Hospital contacted the concerned doctor by phone and expressed anger over the patient’s critical condition.
The family also alleged that this was not the first incident involving the same doctor, claiming that another woman from their family had previously faced a life-threatening situation due to alleged negligence but fortunately survived.
The protesters accused the medical staff of negligence and irresponsibility, which they say led to Shazia Sheikh’s death.
They appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, the Chief Minister of Sindh, the Sindh Health Department, the District Health Officer (DHO) Sukkur, and other relevant authorities to take immediate notice of the incident, suspend the doctors and staff of the Nasirabad PPHI Unit, initiate strict departmental and legal action against them, and cancel the licenses of the responsible doctors.
The protesters warned that if justice was not provided, they would expand their protest movement.
