Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister Iftikhar Gilani has said powers granted under the 13th Constitutional Amendment cannot be curtailed, rejecting what he called false propaganda about changes to the state’s status.

Addressing office-bearers of the AJK Bar Council and bar associations in Islamabad on Saturday, Gilani said constitutional amendments were part of an evolutionary process, and any changes proposed in the public interest would be brought before the legislative assembly.

He noted that the 14th and 15th amendments followed the 13th Amendment, describing this as part of the continuing evolution of the legal framework.

He alleged that misleading propaganda was being spread to create unrest in the state, adding that negotiations meant listening to one another rather than imposing one’s own demands.

Gilani also pointed out that two districts still lacked representation in the AJK Legislative Assembly, calling for collective efforts to address the state’s challenges.

AJK PM directs presentation of Lawyers’ Protection Act

Gilani announced that space would be provided to the AJK Bar Council for its premises and directed that the Lawyers’ Protection Act be presented at the next AJK Cabinet meeting.

He said timely delivery of justice could resolve up to 90 per cent of public grievances, adding that restoring citizens’ confidence in state institutions was a government priority.

He also called for making the Law Commission functional.

Noting that the world had advanced rapidly over the past 25 years, Gilani urged lawyers and other stakeholders to propose practical measures addressing public concerns, particularly education, healthcare and employment.

He said legal and institutional reforms should focus on public welfare and the collective progress of the state.
