PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA Shahid Khattak has claimed that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ‘Chief Minister’ Sohail Afridi and party leaders, including Junaid Akbar, have been arrested, urging supporters to gather in Peshawar following the imposition of an emergency in the province.
In a post on X, Khattak, who is president of PTI’s southern region in KP, said he was present in Peshawar and called on people to come out in support of jailed party founder Imran Khan.
“Pakistanis, now it is your turn,” Khattak wrote, urging residents to take to the streets for Imran Khan and describing themselves as his soldiers.
He also called on people from the tribal districts and other parts of the province to head towards Peshawar, saying he would join them wherever their numbers grew.
Claiming that Junaid Akbar and other party colleagues had also been arrested, Khattak urged residents of the southern districts, including Karak, to block the national highway and asked supporters to converge on Peshawar.
The calls came after President Asif Ali Zardari approved the imposition of an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid concerns over the province’s law and order situation. The move has heightened political tensions between the federal government and the PTI-led provincial administration.
Before the announcement, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi had vowed that the PTI would resist any move to impose an emergency or governor’s rule, describing such action as illegal. The party’s long march, launched to demand Imran Khan’s release, has been moving through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The arrests claimed by Khattak had not been independently confirmed in the reports reviewed for this story.
