ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said on Sunday the federal government had spent more than a month trying to bring the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on board to jointly tackle terrorism before the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in the province.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad alongside Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Naqvi said the government had made repeated efforts to secure the provincial government’s cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

“Today was not an easy day for us,” Naqvi said, adding that he had personally remained in contact with relevant people behind the scenes in an effort to develop a joint strategy against terrorism.

He said the efforts to engage the PTI-led provincial government had begun before the party announced its long march, adding that the government had tried to address PTI’s demands before the protest.

Naqvi said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was scheduled to meet opposition leaders in the Senate and National Assembly on September 15, before travelling to New York on September 17, but the government did not receive confirmation from PTI for the proposed meeting.

He said contacts continued despite the lack of confirmation, eventually leading to two rounds of talks involving the opposition and PTI representatives.

The interior minister said the prime minister and President Asif Ali Zardari had also held a meeting and formed a committee to address the situation, which he said he was part of.

Naqvi said PTI leader Asad Qaiser had conveyed that the party was willing to work with the federal government against terrorism. He added that he had advised Qaiser to engage with the KP government to pursue joint action.

The minister questioned the rationale behind PTI’s long march, saying even some people within the party were unclear about the reasons for the protest.

He maintained that the federal government had sought cooperation from the provincial administration to develop a coordinated response to terrorism before resorting to the emergency measures.
