KARACHI: A doctor, his wife and their three children were found dead in a flat in Karachi’s Ahsanabad area, police said on Sunday, with the bodies believed to be several days old.
The five bodies were found in a room on the seventh floor of the flat, police said, adding that the apartment’s door was locked from inside.
East SSP Zubair Nazir Sheikh said the deceased included a doctor who was the family’s breadwinner. The bodies were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.
Sheikh said the three children were all under the age of 10.
He said the Crime Scene Unit had collected evidence from the apartment and it was too early to draw any conclusions about the deaths. The cause of death would become clear after post-mortem examinations, he added.
The police officer said the deceased family had been identified, adding that the doctor was identified as Umar and that his wife and three children had also been identified.
He said one of the doctor’s brothers lived in Punjab and was currently estranged from the family. Police were making efforts to contact him following the doctor’s death.
Police said the exact cause of death would be established after post-mortem examinations, while investigations were under way from various angles. Police were also considering the possibility of suicide, but said no conclusion had been reached.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah expressed grief over the deaths and sought a report from the inspector general of police.
Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar also took notice of the incident and sought details from the East SSP, directing him to conduct a thorough investigation and submit its findings.
Lanjar directed the SSP to personally supervise the investigation and keep him updated on its progress.
