Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities want to continue dialogue and cooperation with Pakistan and believe Saudi Arabia can play an important role in resolving differences between the two neighbours, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said in an interview .
Mujahid said Kabul welcomed efforts by Saudi Arabia and other countries to help ease tensions with Islamabad, describing Riyadh as a friend of both countries that could play a “positive role” in resolving their disputes.
“We want dialogue and cooperation with Pakistan,” Mujahid said, adding that Afghanistan welcomed efforts by all countries seeking to help resolve the differences between Kabul and Islamabad.
His comments came amid heightened tensions between the two countries over cross-border militancy. Pakistan has repeatedly accused militant groups, particularly the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), of using Afghan territory to plan and launch attacks inside Pakistan. The Taliban reject the allegations.
Mujahid said Afghan territory was not being used for terrorism and denied that Kabul allows the TTP to operate from Afghanistan or supports armed groups targeting other countries.
He said Pakistan should address its security challenges internally rather than attribute them to Afghanistan, arguing that unrest involving the TTP and Baloch militant groups predates the Taliban’s return to power.
Warning against military action
Mujahid also warned Pakistan against carrying out military operations inside Afghanistan, saying Kabul would defend its sovereignty if its territory were attacked.
“If Pakistan invokes Article 51 to violate the sanctity of Afghan territory, Afghanistan has the right to defend its country, and we will do so,” he said, warning of a “crushing response” to any violation of Afghan sovereignty.
The remarks followed allegations by Pakistan’s military spokesperson that Afghan territory was being used to recruit, train and arm militants responsible for attacks inside Pakistan.
Pakistan has maintained that its main demand from Kabul is that Afghan soil should not be used for attacks against Pakistan and has called for concrete and verifiable action against militant groups.
Saudi role
Mujahid said Saudi Arabia was well placed to help bridge differences between Kabul and Islamabad because of its relations with both countries.
He also welcomed broader diplomatic efforts involving countries including China, Qatar, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia to reduce tensions and encourage dialogue.
The Taliban spokesperson said Kabul remained open to stronger intelligence-sharing and security cooperation with Pakistan, while insisting that Afghanistan’s sovereignty must be respected.
