Pakistan Seeks Explanation from India Over Sudden Drop in Chenab River Water Flow

Islamabad: Pakistan has formally sought clarification from India over a significant decrease in the flow of water in the Chenab River, officials confirmed.

According to sources in the Ministry of Water Resources, the sharp reduction in water levels at the Marala headworks is not in line with the provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty, raising serious concerns in Islamabad.

The ministry stated that the observed reduction in water flow appears to be inconsistent with treaty obligations, and Pakistan believes it may constitute a violation of the agreement governing water sharing between the two countries.

Officials added that the Pakistani Indus Waters Commissioner has formally contacted his Indian counterpart to request detailed information regarding the sudden drop in water flow and any possible upstream activities that may have caused it.

Authorities emphasized that water availability is crucial for agriculture and the national economy, and any unexpected changes in river flow require immediate explanation under the framework of the treaty.
