The Unusual Traffic Signal That Turns Green Only Once a Year

Traffic lights around the world serve the same basic purpose—regulating the flow of vehicles and ensuring road safety—but their use can vary widely depending on local needs, laws, and even cultural context. One particularly unusual example comes from Japan, where a traffic signal operates in a way that is both unique and surprisingly practical.

On Himakajima, a small island in Japan, there is a traffic signal that stays red almost the entire year and turns green only once annually. This quirky system isn’t due to malfunction or neglect—it’s entirely intentional.

Himakajima is a tiny island with an area of less than one square kilometer and a population of around 2,000 people. Due to its small size, the number of vehicles and roads on the island is extremely limited. As a result, there is virtually no need for a full network of traffic signals.

In fact, the island has only one traffic light, located near its eastern harbor. For most of the year, this signal remains red, as traffic flow does not require active regulation. However, once a year, the signal is activated and the green (or blue, as commonly used in Japan) light is turned on.

The purpose behind this unusual practice is educational rather than functional. Local authorities use the signal as a teaching tool to help residents—especially adults who may not frequently drive in larger cities—understand how traffic lights work.

During this annual event, residents are reminded how to respond to changing signals: when to stop at red and when it is safe to proceed on green. This ensures that if they travel to busier urban areas, they are familiar with standard traffic rules and do not face confusion or risk.

Japan is already known for some unique traffic practices, such as the use of blue lights at intersections due to linguistic and historical reasons. However, Himakajima’s once-a-year green signal stands out as a creative approach to community education.
