KARACHI: A major power breakdown at the Dhabeji Pumping Station has disrupted several pumping facilities, raising concerns about a possible reduction in water supply to Karachi.
According to the Water Corporation, electricity supply to different phases of Dhabeji was suspended at around 6am. K-Electric attributed the outage to a cable fault.
The power failure affected the third phase, fourth phase and K-III pump house. As a result, 10 out of 21 pumps at the pumping station became non-operational.
The Water Corporation warned that the shutdown of 10 pumps could partially affect water supply to Karachi.
Officials said they were in continuous contact with K-Electric management to restore electricity as soon as possible. Once power is restored, the affected pumps will be brought back into operation immediately.
The Water Corporation said water supply to the affected areas would return to normal after electricity is restored.
K-Electric’s Statement
K-Electric said that a fire in bushes damaged cables belonging to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation, leading to the disruption.
According to K-Electric’s spokesperson, its technical team was present at the location where the fire damaged the Water Corporation’s cables.
K-Electric said it was also in continuous coordination with the Water Corporation to ensure the electricity supply was restored as quickly as possible.
The power disruption is being closely monitored because Dhabeji is a major source of water supply for Karachi. A prolonged outage could increase pressure on the city’s water distribution system.
