ISLAMABAD: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said that attacks on Saudi Arabia from Yemen will activate the joint defence agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.
Speaking on the television programme Aaj Shahzaib Khanzada Kay Saath, Khawaja Asif said Pakistan was obligated to provide assistance under the agreement, adding that there should be no doubt about the country’s commitment.
He reiterated that the attacks on Saudi Arabia from Yemen would trigger the provisions of the joint defence pact between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.
According to the defence minister, under the trilateral Mecca agreement, aggression against one of the three countries would be considered aggression against all three.
The statement comes after Yemen’s Houthi movement, Ansar Allah, carried out attacks on the Saudi cities of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Najran and Jazan, targeting civilian and economic infrastructure. The attacks reportedly left 73 people injured, including women and children.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the Houthi attacks in Saudi Arabia, saying that such attacks not only threaten innocent lives but also undermine regional peace and security.
The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s continued support for the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Saudi Arabia.
He also expressed solidarity with the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and the people of Saudi Arabia.
