Before erasers were attached to pencils, correcting mistakes was much less convenient.
It is widely reported that Hymen Lipman introduced the pencil with an attached eraser in the 1850s and later patented the idea. He reportedly sold the patent rights to Joseph Reckendorfer for $100,000.
What began as a simple convenience eventually became one of the most familiar features of the modern pencil.
