LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has criticized the Punjab government, claiming that the province is witnessing more symbolic and publicity-oriented initiatives than meaningful development work.
Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that the situation concerning law and order in the country was deteriorating and that terrorist incidents were increasing. He expressed concern over the growing frustration among young people, saying that the country was facing an increasing trend of brain drain as talented youth continued to look for opportunities abroad.
The Jamaat-e-Islami leader said that the growing disappointment among young people was a serious issue that required immediate attention. According to him, the lack of opportunities and worsening economic conditions were contributing to a sense of uncertainty among the younger generation.
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman also claimed that Jamaat-e-Islami was increasingly succeeding in creating political and social awareness among the public. He said the party was continuing its efforts to highlight issues affecting ordinary citizens and to mobilize people around economic, political and governance-related concerns.
Discussing the country’s taxation system, the JI emir criticized what he described as an unfair tax burden on citizens. He alleged that income tax was largely being collected from salaried individuals, while other segments of society were not contributing their fair share.
He said that the excessive number of taxes was placing additional pressure on ordinary people, particularly those already struggling with rising living costs. According to him, the existing taxation structure was contributing to the financial difficulties faced by the middle and lower-income classes.
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman further alleged that corruption could be seen in almost every sector. He criticized the performance of government institutions and called for greater transparency and accountability in the use of public resources.
Turning specifically to Punjab, the JI leader said that the province was not seeing enough genuine development work. He claimed that the government was focusing more on initiatives designed to create an impression of progress rather than projects that could produce substantial and lasting benefits for the public.
“Punjab has very little real work, while there are more showy measures,” he said, while criticizing the provincial government’s priorities.
He also announced that a public gathering would be held in Rawalpindi and that he would meet representatives of the business community during his visit. He said the party would continue engaging with traders and other sections of society to discuss the economic challenges they were facing.
