KARACHI: The judicial commission formed to investigate the murder of young Karachi businessman Mir Raza has formally begun its proceedings and issued notices to his family and other relevant parties.
The commission has started work on the case and issued notices to Mir Raza’s family and their lawyer, Jibran Nasir, directing them to appear before the commission on August 28.
The commission has also issued a notice to the Sindh government’s focal person as part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mir Raza’s killing.
The development comes amid objections from Mir Raza’s family over the formation and mandate of the judicial commission. Jibran Nasir, who is representing Mir Raza’s father, had previously rejected the Sindh government’s decision to establish the commission.
Speaking to Geo News, Nasir said that Mir Raza’s family intended to approach the High Court regarding the formation of a joint investigation team (JIT). He said the family would oppose the judicial commission and had not been consulted before it was established.
According to Nasir, the family was not informed about the decision to establish the judicial commission, while the terms of reference (ToRs) for the inquiry had also not been made public.
The commission’s decision to issue notices marks the formal beginning of its investigation. The appearance of Mir Raza’s family and their lawyer on August 28 is expected to provide the commission with an opportunity to hear their position and concerns regarding the case.
The inquiry is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the killing and consider relevant information presented by the family, government representatives and other stakeholders.
Meanwhile, the family’s reported intention to seek relief from the High Court could add a legal dimension to the ongoing investigation process. The family has maintained that a transparent investigation mechanism, including a JIT, is necessary to establish the facts and determine responsibility for the killing.
The judicial commission will now proceed with its inquiry while the family considers its legal options regarding the investigation and the commission’s terms of reference.
