International media outlets have reported Pakistan’s rejection of allegations made by the family and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) regarding the treatment and medical care of former prime minister Imran Khan in prison.
According to a report published by The Washington Post, citing the Associated Press, Pakistan’s Ministry of Information rejected allegations of cruelty, mental torture, solitary confinement and medical neglect involving the PTI founder.
The government maintained that Imran Khan is serving sentences imposed by the courts following judicial proceedings and is not being held in prison under a government order.
The Associated Press reported that Pakistani authorities said Khan is not being held in solitary confinement and has been provided access to family members, lawyers and doctors. The government also cited more than 900 visits to Khan since his imprisonment in 2023.
The government further stated that medical boards from PIMS, Shifa, Shaukat Khanum, and Al-Shifa Eye Hospital are conducting over 30 medical examinations of Imran Khan.
The court also ordered prison authorities to allow weekly meetings with family members and telephone calls with Khan’s sons.
According to the American newspaper The Seattle Times: The PTI founder has been provided a compound in prison consisting of seven cells, equipped with facilities for sleeping and exercise.
He is also supplied with meat, chicken, fruit, milk, dried fruits, juice, and clean water.
