Saudi Arabia Announces Special Rain Prayer (Salat al-Istisqa) Across the Kingdom

Riyadh: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has directed that Salat al-Istisqa (the prayer for rain) be performed across Saudi Arabia on Thursday, seeking blessings of rainfall amid dry conditions.

According to a statement issued by the Royal Court, citizens and residents have been encouraged to turn to Allah Almighty in repentance, seek forgiveness, perform good deeds, and pray for rain. The statement emphasized the importance of humility, reflection, and sincere supplication during times of drought and delayed rainfall.

The Royal Court noted that the call for Salat al-Istisqa follows the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who would offer the special prayer during periods of drought and when rain was delayed. The practice is a longstanding Islamic tradition observed in Muslim communities facing water shortages or dry weather conditions.

Salat al-Istisqa is typically performed in congregation in open areas or mosques and includes additional supplications asking for mercy, rainfall, and relief from hardship. Religious scholars often remind worshippers to engage in charitable acts, reconciliation, and increased remembrance of Allah as part of the spiritual preparation for the prayer.

Authorities have not specified particular locations, but mosques throughout the Kingdom are expected to organize congregational prayers in coordination with local administrations.

Saudi Arabia, like other countries in the region, experiences limited rainfall and relies heavily on desalination and groundwater resources. Periodic calls for rain prayers reflect both the Kingdom’s religious traditions and its awareness of environmental and climatic challenges.
