Riyadh: The Saudi Cabinet has approved an agreement with Qatar to establish an electric high-speed railway link connecting Riyadh and Doha, marking a major step toward enhancing regional connectivity and economic integration.
The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held in Riyadh on Tuesday and chaired by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz. The project reflects growing cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Qatar and is expected to significantly improve travel and trade between the two Gulf nations.
According to details released by the Saudi Press Agency, the proposed railway line will stretch approximately 785 kilometers and will feature electric high-speed trains capable of exceeding speeds of 300 kilometers per hour. Once completed, the rail link will drastically reduce travel time between Riyadh and Doha to around two hours, offering a fast and efficient alternative to air and road travel.
The ambitious infrastructure project will also connect key cities and stations along the route, including Dammam and Al-Ahsa, strengthening internal transportation networks within Saudi Arabia while linking them to Qatar’s capital. Officials believe the railway will facilitate smoother movement of passengers and goods, boost tourism, and support economic diversification goals under Saudi Vision 2030.
High-speed rail systems are widely regarded as environmentally friendly transportation solutions. The electric-powered trains are expected to reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional fuel-based transport, contributing to sustainability goals in both countries.
During the Cabinet session, members were also briefed on recent diplomatic engagements involving Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. The Cabinet was informed about the Crown Prince’s recent telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as his meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during official visits.
The Cabinet welcomed the positive outcomes of these diplomatic engagements, noting that they reflect the Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, including energy, trade, infrastructure, and technology.
The approval of the high-speed rail agreement is seen as part of broader regional efforts to enhance Gulf connectivity. Improved transportation links between Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have long been a strategic priority aimed at promoting economic integration, easing cross-border movement, and fostering closer ties among member states.
Experts suggest that the Riyadh-Doha railway could serve as a foundation for a larger regional rail network in the future, potentially linking additional GCC capitals and major cities. Such a development would transform travel patterns in the region and create new opportunities for commerce and tourism.
The project timeline, construction phases, and funding mechanisms are expected to be announced in due course. However, officials have indicated that the agreement marks a significant milestone and demonstrates the shared vision of Saudi Arabia and Qatar for deeper cooperation and sustainable development.
